چکیده

P olyethylene Glycol-Electrolyte Lavage Solution (PEG-ELS), “Golytely,” has been available since the early 1980s. Davis et al, developed it as a safer alternative for traditional bowel cleansing using balanced electrolyte solution. It provides rapid cleansing of the bowel with only minimal transmucosal movement of water or sodium (1). Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is a linear polymer made up of repeating two-carbon length hydrocarbons joined by oxygen to form an ether linkage. This structure produces a hydrophobic and hydrophilic portion of the polymer. The hydrophilic oxygen molecules allow for bonding to surrounding water molecules. PEG 3350 is the most common form used in gastric lavage solutions. It is one of the larger PEG molecules made up of 68–84 units. Its large size keeps it from being absorbed by the

Aspiration Pneumonitis Caused by Polyethylene Glycol-Electrolyte Solution Treated with Conservative Management

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolyte solution, Golytely, is an osmotic laxative commonly used in preoperative bowel cleansing. In this case report, a 9-year-old boy developed aspiration pneumonitis following accidental infusion of PEG solution into his right lung following migration of his nasogastric tube (NGT). Hypoxemia and tachypnea without respiratory failure were observed after infusion....

Fatal aspiration of polyethylene glycol solution.

Endoscopy of the colon requires adequate cleansing of the entire bowel. Several laxative regimens have been propagated, but bowel preparation with polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution is popular because of the easy application and good cleansing results. Although very safe in daily use, complications of this bowel-cleansing procedure have been reported and aspiration of the PEG solution is a poss...

Fulminant pulmonary oedema after administration of a balanced electrolyte polyethylene glycol solution.

The safety of balanced electrolyte polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions has been documented in children. 2 We describe a previously well child who developed fulminant pulmonary oedema after treatment with Golytely (Braintree Laboratories, Braintree, USA). The 5 year old boy was electively admitted for treatment of constipation. A nasogastric tube (NGT) was passed for infusion of the PEG solution...
